Struck under the aegis of the Presidential One Dollar Coin Act of 2005, the American Gold Buffalo is the first pure gold (.9999 fine) coin issued by the U.S. Mint. Its design is based on James Earle Fraser's design of the original 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel. The obverse features a profile of a proud Native American male and an American buffalo (or bison) graces the reverse. The coin's weight and content are guaranteed by the Government of the United States of America.
